With my birthday and the holidays around the corner, I am forced to face one thing that makes me extremely uncomfortable - gift receiving. It’s practically become a tradition...my friends and family have to run around aimlessly thinking of gifts for me each year. I am indecisive and I truly don’t need anything anyways. I would much rather have someone tell me that they think I’m a jazzy person. I would rather someone express that I am special to them. All I really want is a well-written card.
I have a strong love relationship with hand-written messages. I have kept stacks of cards that have outlived the gifts I received because words of affirmation are the way to my heart. There’s something profound that happens when we express the way we feel about others. We do not get to share it often but when we do it forces us to reflect. Reflect on who they are and what they mean to you and how your life changed because of their love. What is more beautiful than the knowledge that someone has genuine feelings for you?
You may wonder if I just came from fairy land on a rainbow unicorn of love. And while I wish that was true, the answer is obviously no. I just wish people could freely share what is on their minds and hearts because I am absolutely certain that people’s words have the power to change others.
“I am in awe of you. Your kindness, compassion, light, and passion for life are just a few of the qualities you possess that I adore.” -My Brother
That right there is all I want. The acknowledgement that I am putting good will out into the world; the adoration from someone that means everything to me; the peace that comes from being seen and loved. Something odd happens when people are recognized for their virtues, they are compelled to share their goodness with others even more. Words inspire me to continue to be and do better.
So, give someone a heartfelt card. The way you share your love with someone cannot be bought but it can be written.
