“Knowing how to be solitary is central to the art of loving. When we can be alone, we can be with others without using them as a means of escape.” -Bell Hooks

We are singular beings. Although the human condition necessitates somewhat constant contact with others, the one person that you interact with most is yourself. Therefore, being alone and tending to a relationship with yourself becomes essential to your being. When you cultivate an understanding of yourself as an individual, distinct and undefined by others, you hold yourself responsible for your own well-being rather than surrendering your power to others.  Find comfort in being solitary for you can no longer avoid working on self by using the love of others to fulfill your longings.

Do you use your relationship with others to escape dedicating time to developing yourself? Give yourself time to be alone and watch love flow more freely back to you and those you free from doing the hard work for you.
